The Iris Nebula (NGC 7023) is a reflection nebula located in the constellation Cepheus, about 1,300 light-years from the Sun. The nebula is about 6 light-years in diameter and resembles a flower in appearance.

Nebula Structure

The nebula is composed of dusty material known as interstellar gas and dust surrounding a massive, hot, young star in the process of forming. This central filament of cosmic dust glows with a reddish photoluminescent color, as some of the star's ultraviolet radiation is converted into observable red light.

Color Perception

Although the red hue is due to the central dust, the blue color is dominant. This is due to the reflection of light from nearby stars by the dust, giving the object a bright and contrasting color.

Significance for Astronomy

The Iris Nebula is an important object for studying the processes of star formation and the interaction of stellar radiation with interstellar dust. It provides a unique opportunity to study the dynamics and chemical composition of the interstellar medium.
