Stargazing - In search of a second home

Stargazing - In search of a second home

This Saturday, June 23, 2018, our astronomy team is heading to the village of Karavanny! At 21:00 we will gather at the site near the House of Culture (already in the village).

Our goal is to popularize astronomy and science in general. This time, the topic of the trip will be an overview of astronomy and the search for a "second home". We will talk about what objects can be found in space, why this science is needed and how it helps in everyday life. We will pay special attention to one of the most important tasks of astronomy - the search for habitable planets, the prospects for their discovery, search methods and the chances of humanity for resettlement.

As always, we will have with us powerful computerized telescopes SkyWatcher with apertures of 200 and 250 mm, through which you can see not only objects of our Solar System, but also distant galaxies located at a distance of tens of millions of light years.

Results of the astrovisit

The astrovisit in the village of Karavanny became a real celebration of science!

That evening, about 50 people gathered, many of whom came from Orenburg. We settled right on the site in front of the local House of Culture, creating a cozy atmosphere for communication and observations.

Lectures and stories:

  • Misha presented astrophotography to the audience, demonstrating beautiful nebulae and distant galaxies.
  • Sergey spoke about the prospects for searching for planets suitable for life, and answered questions about the methods of their detection.
  • Katerina gave a fascinating lecture on constellations, taught the participants how to navigate by the stars and told them about the brightest stars visible to the naked eye.

Observations:

  • Vladimir Ivanovich controlled the telescopes, showing the participants:
  • Jupiter with its stripes and satellites.
  • Saturn's rings.
  • The surface of the Moon.
  • Bright double stars.

Participants' impressions:

"Thank you for such an interesting evening! It was great to learn more about space and see it with my own eyes through telescopes."

"I really enjoyed the lecture on constellations and the opportunity to learn how to navigate by the stars. Now I will know where to find the North Star!"

Acknowledgments:

  • Many thanks to all the participants for their active participation, interesting questions and positive atmosphere!
  • Special thanks to the "Native Towns" program of the "Gazpromneft-Orenburg" company for the equipment provided, which made the lectures and observations more visual and interesting.
