May 24, 2018 at 20:00 as part of the RIA56 project "Look at the stars" Orenburg astronomical club "Orion" invites you to an evening lecture on astronomy.
We held a small vote, and most participants chose the topic "Myths and misconceptions about space" (to be honest, we voted for this topic ourselves 😜).
Let's talk about many established myths and misconceptions about space. For example:
- Is there an open fire in space, as Hollywood movies show us?
- What kind of planet was between Jupiter and Mars, where did it go?
- What kind of face and pyramids were found on Mars?
If you want to have an interesting time outdoors, listen to space stories and look at the starry sky through a telescope - come, it will be interesting!

- The second part is a tour of spring-summer constellations, legends and orientation in the sky.
- The third part is observations through telescopes: the Moon, Jupiter, Saturn, Mars, double stars, star clusters, nebulae.
Results of the astrovisit
On the evening of May 24, astronomy enthusiasts gathered 30 km from Orenburg to observe the starry sky. The astronomical community "Orion" has prepared interesting media materials on the topic "Myths and misconceptions about space", collecting the most common misconceptions about space and our Universe. We told where the truth is and where is fiction.
Observations:
- After the Sun finally went beyond the horizon, the sky became dark enough for observations.
- Because of the bright Moon, deep space objects were hard to see, but we were able to see:
- The Moon itself.
- Jupiter.
- Open star clusters.
- Double stars.
- Even a couple of nebulae!
Special moments:
- Participants with Nikon and Canon DSLR cameras connected them to telescopes to take impressive astronomical photos.
- Sergey Medvedev talked about the constellations and the brightest stars we observed.
- Vladimir Ivanovich described in detail the objects visible through the telescopes.
- A bonus was the opportunity to see the International Space Station (ISS) flying above us!
Participants' impressions:
"Despite the hungry mosquitoes, the evening was a success! It was very interesting to learn the truth about popular myths about space."
"It's great that I was able to connect the camera to the telescope and take my first astrophotographs!"
Acknowledgments:
- Many thanks to all participants for their active participation and interest in astronomy!
- Special thanks to the "Native Cities" program of the "Gazpromneft-Orenburg" company for providing the equipment.
"Thank you all for the evening! We hope that everyone got a good night's sleep today 😊 Wait for our next events!"
