Stargazing - Journey to the End of the Universe

Stargazing - Journey to the End of the Universe

This Friday, June 21, 2019, as part of the "Look at the Stars" project of the Orion astronomical club with the support of the Orenburg Media online publication and the Rodnye Goroda social investment program (Gazpromneft-Orenburg), we invite you to spend time at an astronomical event outside the city - an astronomical trip to Mount Goryun. It will be interesting! In addition to observing with real telescopes, we will prepare an interesting lecture and go on a journey to the edge of our Universe.

Event details

Organizers and support

Organizers:

  • Astronomical club "Orion"
  • Online publication "Orenburg Media"

Support:

  • Social investment program "Hometowns" of the Gazprom Neft company

Event information

Date and time: 06/21/2019, starts at 21:00

Terms of participation:

  • The event is free (but we will be glad to support you with donations).

  • Recommended age: from 6 years.

  • Camping mat, foam, blanket or chair for comfortable placement in the clearing.

  • Tea, cookies, candy, sandwiches - appetite comes quickly in the fresh air.

  • Warm clothes (it's cold at night).

  • Good mood!

How the astrotour goes:

  • The first part of the program is a lecture on astronomy and traveling around the Universe.
  • The second part is a tour of the spring-summer constellations, legends and orientation in the sky.
  • The third part is observations through telescopes: planets of the Solar System, double stars, star clusters, the Moon.

Event program

  1. Lecture:
  • We will go on a space journey from our planet and try to get to the edge of the Universe.
  • We will try to find a planet suitable for life with the possible prospect of organizing a human colony there.
  1. Overview of telescopes:
  • The structure of telescopes, their differences, which telescope is better and what can be seen through them.
  1. Excursion to the constellations:
  • We will study the constellations visible in our hemisphere, their names and legends.
  1. Observations with telescopes:
  • Planets of the Solar System, nearby double stars and distant star clusters.
  • Astrophotography using cameras connected to telescopes.

Prohibited actions

  • Leaving litter.
  • Smoking.
  • Drinking alcohol.
  • Being intoxicated.
  • Disrespectful to other participants of the event.

Results of the astro-trip

A hot day gave way to a warm night, and more than 100 astronomy enthusiasts came to the traditional observation site - Mount Goryun (the organizers counted about 50 cars!).

Topic of the lecture:

We went on a walk from our home planet and the Solar System to large-scale structures of the Universe - superclusters of galaxies, the Great Sloan Wall and the Great Attractor.

Observations:

  • A clear cloudless night allowed us to see the spring-summer constellations.

  • Lecturer Sergey Medvedev spoke about stellar navigation.

  • Four telescopes with different diameters of mirrors and lenses were installed on the site.

  • The telescopes were used to observe:

  • Double stars (Albireo - blue and red).

  • Star clusters (M13, Chi and Ash Persei).

  • Jupiter (stripes, the Great Red Spot, satellites).

  • Saturn.

  • The Moon (rose around midnight).

We thank all participants for their interest in the project! We are glad that you are coming with children - we are sure that they will remember the stars, telescopes and the atmosphere of the event for the rest of their lives. See you at the next astronomical trips!
